Colonoscopies save lives. Why did a trial suggest they might not?

A major clinical study raised questions about one of the most celebrated cancer-screening procedures available, but a close look at the data tells a different story.Overall, only 42% of people in the group that had been invited to get colonoscopies actually got one. If the compliance rate had been 100%, the researchers’ analysis showed, the test would have reduced cancer risk by 31% — from 1.22% to 0.84% — and it would have reduced the risk of death from colorectal cancer by 50% — from 0.3% to 0.15%.  https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-00020-5

Consumption of Fast Food Linked to Potentially Deadly Liver Disease. A new study from Keck Medicine of USC found that fast food consumption is associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a serious condition in which fat builds up in the liver. The study revealed that people with obesity or diabetes who consume 20% or more of their daily calories from fast food have severely elevated levels of fat in their liver compared to those who consume less or no fast food. The general population also has moderate increases of liver fat when one-fifth or more of their diet is fast food. https://scitechdaily.com/consumption-of-fast-food-linked-to-potentially-deadly-liver-disease/

Can We Identify Positive Deviance in Surgery? However, such a framework may overlook lessons and insights that may be available from cases without complications, especially cases with positive outcomes despite being high risk for postoperative complications. How quickly does COVID immunity fade? What scientists know. Vaccination, infection with SARS-CoV-2 and a combination of both provide varying degrees of protection.New evidence suggests that ‘hybrid’ immunity, the result of both vaccination and a bout of COVID-19, can provide partial protection against reinfection for at least eight months1. It also offers greater than 95% protection against severe disease or hospitalization for between six months and a year after an infection or vaccination, according to estimates from a meta-analysis2. Immunity acquired by booster vaccination alone seems to fade somewhat faster. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-00124-y

Cost-effectiveness of low-dose aspirin for the prevention of preterm birth: a prospective study of the Global Network for Women’s and Children’s Health Research. In 2020, the ASPIRIN trial showed the efficacy of low-dose aspirin (LDA) in nulliparous, singleton pregnancies for the prevention of preterm birth. We sought to investigate the cost-effectiveness of this therapy in low-income and middle-income countries. In model simulations, LDA was associated with 141 averted preterm births, 74 averted perinatal deaths, and 31 averted hospitalisations per 10 000 pregnancies. The reduction in hospitalisation resulted in a cost of US$248 per averted preterm birth, $471 per averted perinatal death, and $15·95 per disability-adjusted life year. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/langlo/article/PIIS2214-109X(22)00548-4/fulltext
